That’s why Oxford Health Systems Paramedic Service has taken the next step in prehospital emergency care by carrying blood products on our nurse response vehicles—bringing hospital-level treatment directly to patients when they need it most.
Bringing the Blood Bank to the Patient
Traditionally, patients experiencing severe blood loss had to wait until they arrived at the emergency department before receiving a blood transfusion. Today, advances in emergency medicine have shown that administering blood earlier can significantly improve outcomes for critically injured patients.
Our critical care nurse units are equipped to carry blood products, allowing our highly trained teams to begin transfusions in the field while transporting patients to definitive care.
This capability helps bridge the gap between the scene of an emergency and the hospital, giving patients a better chance during their most critical moments.
A Community Resource Made Possible Through Partnership
While Oxford Health Systems Paramedic Service is proud to provide this advanced level of care, we couldn’t do it alone.
We partner with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers to ensure our teams have access to the blood products needed to care for critically ill and injured patients. Through this partnership, blood donated by generous volunteers throughout our region becomes available for hospitals and emergency medical services, including our prehospital blood program.
Every unit of blood carried on our vehicles began with someone making the selfless decision to donate.
Without volunteer donors, this lifesaving resource simply wouldn’t exist.
Why Blood Donations Matter
Blood cannot be manufactured. It cannot be replaced by medication or created in a laboratory.
It must come from volunteer donors.
Every day, blood is needed to treat:
